Happy Thanksgiving open thread: what are you thankful for?

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at S&R. Today we invite those of you reading (and really, don’t you have anything better to do?) to tell us what you’re thankful about.

I’ll go first. While I have much to be thankful for - a wonderful wife, the coolest dog alive, etc. - I find myself really appreciating the fact that for the next four years I won’t have to hold my breath every time the president opens his mouth. I won’t have to worry about his inability to speak in complete sentences, about whether or not he’s going to make up some new words, about whether he’s going to say something insanely stupid and embarrass us even further in the eyes of the rest of the world.

I’m thankful that, whatever mistakes and bad decisions he will make, Barack Obama is at least intelligent, articulate, witty and self-possessed.

Your turn.

Child Abuse Increases During Economic Crisis

sad woman

stubborn economic times often mean a spike in the total of child-abuse cases, and drift monetary conditions are ideal for breeding unhappiness. in new york city deserted, to 14,000 private-sector jobs were eliminated in october. the nationalist youth scurrility coalition says that there is a long-standing correlation between ripe unemployment rates and an improve in child-abuse cases.if you are going through a financial disaster, be aware of the warning signs that indicate you may be close to to burn out vacillate up at your kids. feelings of dimple, insomnia and being short of patience with your kids are all signs that you may need to request out help.basically, when the minor things your kids do to annoy you start to feel like major infractions, journeying back and take a deep breath. remember that they’re petty kids, and they don’t understand the pressures grown-ups have a funny feeling during these tough times.i know my patience is always a little short when the numbers in the checking account get farther down and lower as the month goes by. by disquieting to watch over our kids, we again don’t give them enough credit. while you don’t miss to scare them, there’s nothing awful with a little honesty. let them know you’re stressed unlit.and the best advice? sidle away and give yourself a time-out of order.do you feel your temper rising during times of economic hardship?

Harry Shearer: Fixing The Responder, Ignoring the Cause?

Funny picture

NEW ORLEANS–In a Monday blog post, WashPost’s Al Kamen reports that the incoming Obama administration will bring back James Lee Witt, who successfully whipped FEMA into shape under Bill Clinton, to…whip FEMA back into shape. Obama, according to Kamen’s sources, also plans to liberate FEMA from the Homeland Security bureaucracy. What’s not to like?

Well….FEMA was the poster child for federal incompetence, according to the consensus media narrative of the 2005 New Orleans flooding disaster. And it’s undeniable that FEMA’s lack of alacrity (and of advance planning) made a horrible situation worse. But the true poster child for federal incompetence, in the eyes, at least, of New Orleanians was and is the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps, tasked by a 1960s Congress to protect New Orleans from severe hurricanes, failed, by its own standards, and according to its own post-mortem. More independent observers, like the UC Berkeley ILIT team, had an even harsher verdict. Yet who’s blithely going about fixing that which they screwed up so royally? The Corps. Who’s reviewing their work? If anybody, engineers approved and paid by…the Corps.

President-Elect Obama has talked recently of investing in infrastructure. The program to restore the Louisiana coastal wetlands–this region’s buffer against hurricane severity, and a resource profoundly damaged by decades of Corps- and oil-company-sponsored canal and pipeline building across delicate marshes–was estimated in 2000 to cost $14 billion. At the time, that figure was regarded as impossibly huge. Flash forward eight years, when hundreds of federal billions are being flung at profligate banks. It would be welcome news if coastal wetlands restoration, currently a major state responsibility, received serious federal help. It would be even more welcome, not only to Louisiana but to every state where the Corps has done its work (and that’s every state) if independent peer review of Army Corps designs and plans were given equal priority with reforming FEMA. FEMA, after all, only cleans up the messes after they happen.

Mystery piano in woods perplexes police

(CNN) — Was it a theft? A prank? A roundabout effort to bring some holiday cheer to the police? Authorities in Harwich, Massachusetts, are probing the mysterious appearance of a piano, in good working condition, in the middle of the woods.

A police officer examines an oddly placed piano in the woods of Harwich, Massachusetts.

A police officer examines an oddly placed piano in the woods of Harwich, Massachusetts.

Discovered by a woman who was walking a trail, the Baldwin Acrosonic piano, model number 987, is intact — and, apparently, in tune.

Sgt. Adam Hutton of the Harwich Police Department said information has been broadcast to all the other police departments in the Cape Cod area in hopes of drumming up a clue, however minor it may be.

But so far, the investigation is flat.

Also of note: Near the mystery piano — serial number 733746 — was a bench, positioned as though someone was about viagra kaufen to play.

The piano was at the end of a dirt road, near a walking path to a footbridge in the middle of conservation land near the Cape.

It took a handful of police to move the piano into a vehicle to transport it to storage, so it would appear that putting it into the woods took more than one person.

Asked whether Harwich police will be holding a holiday party in the storage bay — tickling the ivories, pouring eggnog — while they await word of the piano’s origin and fate, Hutton laughed. No such plans.

Harwich police have had some fun, though. Among the photos they sent to the news media is one of Officer Derek Dutra examining the piano in the woods. The police entitled the photo "Liberace."

Kings Bust Caps, 5-2

Los Angeles Kings fans were a bit apprehensive about seeing their team face superstar Alex Ovechkin and his red-hot Washington Capitals on Thursday night. On one hand, it was a rare chance to see the Capitals, who haven’t visited L.A. since Dec. 14, 2005. On the other, the Kings were on a two-game slide and the Caps were riding a streak of six wins in seven games, including a thrashing of the Ducks on the previous evening.

As with most hockey games, as soon as you expect one outcome, you get the polar opposite. The Kings played one of their best overall games of the season. The reunited line of Brown-Kopitar-O’Sullivan scored a goal apiece on their way to a 5-2 clobbering of the Caps.

On Saturday, the Kings introduce their new alternative jersey at exactly 7:34 PM as they face the Colorado Avalanche at Staples Center.

Obama’s cell phone records breached

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Records from a cell phone used by President-elect Obama were improperly breached, apparently by employees of the cell phone company, Verizon Wireless said Thursday.

An Obama spokesman said the transition team was told Verizon Wireless workers looked through billing records.

An Obama spokesman said the transition team was told Verizon Wireless workers looked through billing records.

"This week we learned that a number of Verizon Wireless employees have, without authorization, accessed and viewed President-Elect Barack Obama’s personal cell phone account," Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and CEO, said in a statement.

"All employees who have accessed the account — whether authorized or not — have been put on immediate leave, with pay."

The Obama transition team was notified Wednesday by Verizon of the breach, said team spokesman Robert Gibbs. He said the president-elect no longer uses the phone.

McAdam said the device on the account was a simple voice flip-phone, not a BlackBerry or other smartphone designed for e-mail or other data services, so none of Obama’s e-mail could have been accessed.

Verizon Wireless, meanwhile, has launched an internal probe to determine whether Obama’s information was simply shared among employees or whether "the information of our customer had in any way been compromised outside our company, and this investigation continues," McAdam said in an internal company e-mail obtained by CNN buy viagra.

"Employees with legitimate business needs for access will be returned to their positions, while employees who have accessed the account improperly and without legitimate business justification will face appropriate disciplinary action," McAdam said, "up to and including termination."

The company has alerted "the appropriate federal law enforcement authorities," McAdam said.

Gibbs said that while the Secret Service has been notified, he is not aware of any criminal investigation. He said he believes it was billing records that were accessed.

Gibbs said that anyone viewing the records likely would have been able to see phone numbers and the frequency of calls Obama made, but that "nobody was monitoring voicemail or anything like that."
